About the MCS Knives…

The production of a handmade knife is a journey of what seems like a million steps. I take particular pleasure in the design phase and in researching and selecting the finest materials available.

Currently, for my blades, I use two types of steel:  CPM 154, a state of the art, high carbon, high chrome, particle melt steel and S30V, the first steel made exclusively for knife blades, which contains 2% vanadium offering extra abrasion resistance and edge holding ability.

In designing the MCS System knives, my first priority was and is weight. These self-defense knives are designed to be worn in various positions on the body and if they’re too bulky or heavy, they’ll remain at home in the “sock and underwear drawer” and not be available when needed. All of the MCS System knives are slim and light.

I continually upgrade my materials as my research reveals something new and better. For example, after many years of using micarta, neoprene and a smooth surfaced G-10 which were secured to the steel with pins and glue, I now almost exclusively use Grip-Guard G-10, a deep waffle-patterned surface offering a safer, non-slip grip. This material is screwed to the tang of the knife using buttonhead machine screws and threaded inserts. Recently, I purchased equipment that allows me to insert thumb and finger grooves and serrations, another improvement (due in part to feedback from customers), which offers a more secure grip.

Hundreds of my MCS System knives are carried daily by undercover police, members of S.W.A.T. and R.A.I.D. teams, executive protectors, FBI agents and Embassy personnel. But I also have a great number of customers outside of the law enforcement field whose work takes them into unsafe neighborhoods (EMT personnel, newspaper reporters, coroners, etc.). These people, like the customers in law enforcement, report that wearing my knives in their MCS System sheaths provide the security they need to continue to do their jobs in these dangerous locations. I get a lot of complimentary, after-purchase letters and emails and am tremendously gratified that I’ve been able to create something that serves these people so well.
